About Juneteenth
A federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
It is the most recently established U.S. federal holiday. The date is fixed, so the weekday moves each year, and a Saturday or Sunday occurrence shifts the observed day to the adjacent Friday or Monday.
Also known as Juneteenth National Independence Day.
How the date is set
Always 19 June. Because the date is fixed rather than pinned to a weekday, it lands on a different day each year. When it falls on a Saturday, federal offices close the Friday before; when it falls on a Sunday, they close the Monday after.
