About Memorial Day
A federal holiday honoring Americans who died while serving in the armed forces.
It is widely treated as the unofficial start of summer. Being the last Monday in May, it can fall anywhere from 25 to 31 May, and always produces a three-day weekend.
How the date is set
The last Monday in May. Because it is pinned to a weekday rather than a calendar date, it never needs shifting — the actual and observed dates are always the same. It is always a Monday, so it always produces a three-day weekend.
