About Veterans Day
A federal holiday honoring everyone who has served in the U.S. armed forces.
It shares its date with Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, marking the end of the First World War on 11 November 1918. The date is fixed, so a weekend occurrence shifts the observed day to the adjacent Friday or Monday.
How the date is set
Always 11 November. Because the date is fixed rather than pinned to a weekday, it lands on a different day each year. When it falls on a Saturday, federal offices close the Friday before; when it falls on a Sunday, they close the Monday after.
