About Thanksgiving
A federal holiday traditionally centered on a harvest meal shared with family.
Because it is always a Thursday, the following Friday is not itself a federal holiday but is treated as a day off by a great many employers, making a four-day weekend common. The fourth Thursday can fall anywhere from 22 to 28 November.
How the date is set
The fourth Thursday in November. Because it is pinned to a weekday rather than a calendar date, it never needs shifting — the actual and observed dates are always the same. It always falls on a Thursday, so it sits midweek rather than extending a weekend.
