About Labor Day
A federal holiday honoring the American labor movement and the contributions of workers.
It is widely treated as the unofficial end of summer, and in much of the country it marks the start of the school year. As the first Monday in September it can fall anywhere from 1 to 7 September, and always produces a three-day weekend.
How the date is set
The first Monday in September. Because it is pinned to a weekday rather than a calendar date, it never needs shifting — the actual and observed dates are always the same. It is always a Monday, so it always produces a three-day weekend.
