How the puzzle is checked

Words are placed longest-first in one of eight directions, overlapping only where letters agree. Once the grid is filled, every word is read back from the exact position the answer key records — so the key cannot point somewhere the word is not. Generation uses a fixed seed, which is why a printed sheet and a printed key still match each other months later.

Common questions

How many words are hidden in this animals word search?
20 words, in a 15 by 15 grid. They run across, down, diagonally and backwards — all eight directions.
Is there an answer key?
Yes, on the second page of the PDF. Each word is marked where it runs, so overlapping words stay readable.
Are all the words definitely in the grid?
Yes, and that is checked rather than assumed. After the grid is built, every word is read back from the position the answer key records. If a word did not read correctly the puzzle would not be published.
Do the puzzles change each time I download?
No. Each puzzle is generated from a fixed seed, so a printed answer key always matches its puzzle.
